Department of Botany


The Department of Botany was established in (1964 – 1965) -by introducing B.Sc. Allied Botany and during 2012 – 2013- B.Sc and 2013 – 2014 – M. Sc Botany courses was resumed. The Department was conferred as Research Centre in 2014, Ph.D. programmes have been offered in the various fields of basic and applied plant science. Till date, 03 research scholars are pursuing doctoral programme. In due course, various infrastructure facilities viz., Botanical garden, Microbiology lab, Plant tissue culture lab, herbarium, vermi composting yard, terrace garden, rockery and with necessary modern instrumentation facilities have been developed for the purpose of teaching-learning and research.

Students are trained with rich learning experiences by exposing them with hands-on training, offered with high standard practical knowledge. The faculty members of botany are involved in active research in the diversified fields: biodiversity and conservation, medicinal plants, plant nutrition, forest nursery technology, phytochemistry, plant pathology, plant microbial interaction, plant tissue culture and solid and liquid waste management. Department of Botany has good citation records (125) with higher H-index, as on July, 2019 on the peer-review publications of national and international level, authored by members of Botany Faculty. The research publication includes books, monographs, scholarly written general articles, learning materials and technical reports, laboratory manual, has been used as learning resource materials. Research funding awarded from various national agencies UGC, TNSCST and DST (Major and Minor projects), MoEF, State Forest Department supports through research grant amounting 11.5 lakhs, till date provide to a large extent on a fairly good quality research programs through which students and researchers have the access to the current knowledge on the curricula and research. Faculty members of Department of Botany have also been appointed as members in State Government Departments. Besides teaching-learning, research, commitment of the Department of Botany towards the community development is excellent as they involve in several environment awareness, outreach activities.
